Water

Around Berlin, there are 180 kilometers of waterways, including rivers, lakes, and canals. Two rivers flow through the city – the Spree and the Havel. In Berlin’s city center, you can find water tours that take you through the heart of the city, offering views of its main landmarks like the Reichstag, Museum Island, and Berlin Cathedral from the windows of a boat. These rivers hold historical importance, as they were vital trade and transportation routes that helped establish the city’s location and significantly contributed to its economic growth.

Berlin’s lakes are a haven and very popular among people who enjoy swimming, boating, and, of course, having picnics on sunny days. The most popular lakes are Wannsee and Müggelsee. Apart from these, there are other lakes like Schlachtensee and Tegeler See, which are perfect for fishing, paddleboarding, and hiking around their premises.

Berlin’s tap water meets high-quality standards and is safe to drink because it comes from groundwater. This supply system is one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly in Europe. Additionally, the water is rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium. Berlin has 270 public fountains, many of which are historically significant. There are also 17 drinking fountains, whose locations were decided by city residents through online voting.

Water Festival in Berlin

Each year, the city hosts a Water Festival aimed at celebrating aquatic heritage and the importance of water. During this event, there are dragon boat races, various educational workshops, concerts, and other live performances.

Other initiatives and events take place near the riversides, including cultural programs, outdoor cinemas, and markets. One of these initiatives is “School on Water,” where students are introduced to Berlin’s aquatic ecosystem, learn sustainable practices, and understand how to prevent water pollution.
