Education

To become more sustainable, it is essential to first become aware of our consumption habits, recognize them, and make better choices in our daily lives. Vilnius is taking significant steps to help foster this awareness through various initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability, particularly within the education sector and among the wider public.

“More Sustainable” Initiative

The “More Sustainable” initiative, led by the Vilnius City Municipality, is a year-long competition designed for general and pre-school education institutions. This program encourages schools to adopt sustainable and innovative ideas, aiming to make their environments greener while integrating eco-friendly practices into daily school life and the educational process. The municipality offers up to €5,000 in funding for each project, enabling schools to implement practical solutions that promote sustainability.

“Sustainable Development Attitudes at School” Training Course

Recognizing that sometimes the key to choosing a greener lifestyle is knowledge, Vilnius organizes a long-term training course titled “Sustainable Development Attitudes at School” for education professionals working in schools across the city. This project equips educators with the tools and knowledge to incorporate sustainability principles into their classroom practices. It also teaches them how to raise awareness among students about the importance of sustainability and the impact of climate change, thereby fostering a generation of eco-conscious individuals.

“Eat Smart” Program

Vilnius schools can also participate in the “Eat Smart” program, run in partnership with the Public Institution Humana People to People Baltic (HPPB). This initiative supports healthy eating habits by providing participating schools with €2,500 annually to help prepare healthy meals using locally sourced products. In addition to fostering healthy eating, the program educates students about food conservation and other sustainable practices, reinforcing the importance of responsible consumption.

Public Environmental and Ecological Education Projects

Not only educational institutions, but also various organizations in Vilnius can contribute to environmental education through the city’s annual competition to support public environmental and ecological education projects. These projects aim to promote environmental awareness and encourage a sustainable mindset among the general public. The winners of the competition can receive up to €10,000 in funding to implement their ideas, offering a great opportunity to inspire broader action toward sustainability.
